Popularity of USA-Made Foods Continues to Soar

America was founded on the belief that all people are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In a country so patriotic, it’s no surprise that people care where their pets’ food comes from, and they want it to be from the land they live on.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Made in USA" means that "all or virtually all" the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any — or only negligible — foreign content. For consumers, “Made in USA” represents high quality in terms of materials and manufacturing conditions. As the farm-to-table movement gains traction and health conscious consumers themselves are consuming fresher, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients, they expect the same for their furry family members.

After the huge pet food recalls in 2007, pet parents began to pay more attention to what is in their pets’ food. Cats and dogs all over the United States were sickened and killed from pet food containing melamine, an ingredient originated from China. Even though melamine is from China, it could have been included in “fillers” that are added to foods made in America. Reading labels and becoming familiar with the ingredient deck on a bag of food or treats is important for staying educated and aware of what pets are consuming.

Products made in the United States boosts the idea of safety for consumers, therefore encouraging them to potentially spend more money on a higher quality product. While a “Made in USA” label can ensure manufacturing in the United States, which can still mean the ingredients could be sourced from other countries. Keeping consumers educated on the difference between key words like “based”, “developed”, and “sourced” can help them navigate what products they want to purchase.

With Fourth of July right around the corner, contact us to learn more about our USA-made food, treats, and supplies!

Summer Travel Safety Tips

Summer is officially here!
Days are longer, the air is warmer, and the travel itch has begun. For many pet parents, a vacation is no fun unless their four-legged family members can come along. While traveling can be stressful for all, nothing can ruin an adventure across the country more than being unprepared. If your customers are planning to take a trip with pets in tow, we have a few tips to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone.

Traveling with a pet by car involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off, especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Here are a few car travel safety tips to help you prepare for a smooth and safe trip.
• Prep your pet for a long trip. Get your pet geared up by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car.
• Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it will not slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop.
• Prep a pet-friendly travel kit. Bring food, a bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first-aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

Did you know that July is the most popular travel month of the year? Share these tips with your friends to make traveling with their furry family members easier! We are keeping the store stocked up on new products so your dogs can travel in comfort!
